A Blanket for Preston

30 Jan

I took a friend of mine to PurlSoho.com’s warehouse, located in Tustin, California on Friday. I was simply being a friend and showing her how amazing the fabrics were, never intending to buy any for myself. Why do I even try to lie to myself like that? I saw the cutest fabric called Senor Burrito, designed by Alexander Henry and figured I needed to make my first blanket. The back of the blanket is flannel (Old Green) designed by Robert Kaufman. Both fabrics from the warehouse cost about $16.00.  And lastly the batting comes from The Warm Company (Warm & White)…I purchased the batting from Jo-Anns for about $5.50 for 1 yard.

To hold the batting in place I stitched yarn through the tails of the pink donkeys. It looked awesome until I put the blanket in the wash and the tails all came loose. So, I gave them hair cuts. I told my sister-in-law (Preston’s mom) to give the blanket back to me when the tails become too fuzzy and I’ll re-do them. Maybe there is a better way to do this?

Anyhow…here are some photos:

New Fabrics

28 Dec

If it were not for my partner in crime, my cohort, my trusty sidekick (my sister) I am not quite sure I would have found the world of fabric on my own. I used to find quilt shops as something for old women and people with nothing better to do. Now, I find myself searching for them and always looking for new textile designers. This stuff is exciting to me and I hope through this blog it will excite others too. Others who thought the same as I once did about…fabric.

I have only sewn 5 things. 5 things which included 4 square pillows and one waist apron which consisted of 5 separate pieces. That obviously is not a lot, but I can promise you that my wheels are turning and I am constantly dreaming up of new sewing projects.

I lucked out big time 2 weeks ago. My brother-in-law informed me of a local clothing company that was going out of business and that the company was clearing out their warehouse. Amongst the items to be cleared was about 150 pounds of knit fabric. And I got it all…for 20 bucks. Most of the fabric contained stripes and some were solid oh and I got a few yards corduroy.  Below is a picture of only some of the fabric, because…well there was too much to lay out for 2 pictures.
